A reference estimate, not a measurement of the routes actually travelled. Land distances come from routes published by operators. For flights, we use the great-circle distance between cities, calculated using GeoNames coordinates; the specific airports and flights have not yet been confirmed. The total includes around 5,140 km between cities and a 5 km reference distance for the boat trip. It excludes airport connections and other local travel.

Emissions = distance × factor per passenger-kilometre. The group total multiplies the per-person figure by 16 travellers, as confirmed by Adamastor. Plane: 0.12572 kg CO₂e/km, the DESNZ 2026 average for international flights not connected to the UK, in economy class, including fuel production and additional effects at altitude. This average is not specific to the flights taken; it already includes an 8% distance uplift, which we have not added again.

Train: 0.019 kg CO₂e/km, the European electric train average from the Travel & Climate methodology, version 5.1. Coach: 0.04604 kg CO₂e/km, the DESNZ 2026 touring coach average, including fuel production. These are approximations based on average occupancy, not measurements of the vehicles used.

The calculation includes energy use and operation, with emissions associated with energy production, and excludes vehicle manufacture and infrastructure. Without the additional climate effects of flights, the subtotal would be approximately 340 kg CO₂e per person. This reflects a different scope, not an uncertainty range.

Boat trip: a range of 4 to 6 km was adopted for a standard canal cruise as indicated by Adamastor, using the midpoint of 5 km in the journey total. This is a calculation assumption, not the measured distance of the actual trip. Emissions await information on the vessel and its propulsion. No ferry or sea cruise factor was applied to a canal trip.
